Carleton appears here in the title role of Claude Duval, the French-born highwayman whose exploits made him a legend in seventeenth-century England, and the poster's subjects include horses and criminals, which points to the swashbuckling outlaw image the show was built around. The piece is a large color lithograph, about 200 by 182 centimeters, printed by Metropolitan Print of New York in 1882. Carleton was a popular American light-opera performer of the period, and posters like this one were meant to draw crowds to the theater with bold, eye-catching figures.
