Horse-drawn carriages are the defining feature of this view of a Los Angeles street, a scene typical of the decades when horses still carried most passengers and goods. The city grew quickly after the Southern Pacific railroad linked it to the rest of the country in 1876, drawing new residents and expanding its streets. Horse-drawn streetcars ran on tracks in many American cities during this period, and electric lines did not replace them in Los Angeles until the early 1900s. The photograph is dated only approximately, so the exact moment it records remains uncertain.
