An open camp, a simple shelter with one side left open to the fire and the woods, is the subject of this Adirondack view. Such camps grew popular in northern New York in the years around 1900, when city visitors rode the train north to hunt, fish, and spend summers among the mountains. The picture is an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold their views as prints and postcards. Its date range, between 1900 and 1910, places it at the height of that tourist boom.
