Few posters of the late 1930s look back as directly as this one, which names the Ballet Russes de Diaghilev in its title and credits Serge Lifar and Jean Cocteau with organizing the exhibition. Diaghilev's company, founded in Paris in 1909, reshaped European dance and stage design through its work with painters, composers and writers, and Lifar and Cocteau were both closely tied to that legacy. Printed in color lithography in 1939, the poster recalls an enterprise that had ended with Diaghilev's death in 1929. Its subject headings mention ballet in the Soviet Union, though the company itself was based in Paris.
