The Lincoln Memorial, completed in 1922 on the western edge of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is the setting for this view. The Greek Doric temple houses a seated marble statue of Abraham Lincoln by Daniel Chester French, and its interior walls carry the text of the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural Address. The building was dedicated in 1922 and later became the site of Marian Anderson's 1939 concert and Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech. Images of the memorial often emphasize its steps and reflecting pool, which together frame the monument as a civic gathering place.
