The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., is shown here in a longitudinal section, a drawing that cuts the building lengthwise to reveal its interior construction as viewed from the south looking north. Such architectural sections were the working documents of the design and construction teams, recording how the marble walls, the chamber holding the seated statue of Abraham Lincoln, and the foundations beneath them fit together. The memorial was designed by Henry Bacon, dedicated in 1922, and built of white Georgia marble and Indiana limestone. Studying the section today shows how deliberately the monument was engineered to suggest a temple, with its interior space kept separate from the colonnade outside.
