Hoboken, New Jersey, is the setting here, a river city across from Manhattan whose docks and ferry terminals made it a busy crossing point in the early 1900s. The picture shows Roosevelt standing among a crowd, but the title comes from caption data that the Bain News Service supplied and that has not been verified, so the exact occasion remains uncertain. George Grantham Bain's New York agency sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines, and its glass negatives capture public appearances of the period. The recorded date of 3/22/09 falls after Roosevelt left the presidency in March 1909, so it is worth checking against the original caption cards.
