Strung across the narrow gap between brick walls, the laundry lines are what set this scene apart, turning a back alley into a crowded, lived-in room where children have claimed the cobblestones for play. Tenement blocks in Boston's crowded neighborhoods in the early 1900s housed large immigrant families, and courtyards and alleys like this one often served as the only open ground their children had. Photographers documenting urban poverty and housing conditions of the period frequently turned their lenses on such spaces, and the washing overhead is worth noticing as a sign of the constant, labor-heavy work that kept these households going.
