Floyd H. Kroh, known as "Rube," is the player named in this print's caption, listed among the pitchers of the Chicago National League club, which was popularly called the Cubs. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the news photo files of the Bain News Service in New York, which sent images of sports and current events to newspapers in the early 1900s. Its 1910 date falls in a period when the Cubs were among the strongest teams in the National League and their players drew wide attention. Portraits like this one gave readers a face to go with the box scores.
