Adolf Hitler and Fritz Todt, the engineer who directed Germany's road-building program, appear together at the opening of an autobahn section between Munich and Vienna near Salzburg. The record dates the ceremony to April 7, 1938, only weeks after Austria was joined to the German Reich in March, which gave the route added political weight as a link between the two cities. The Nazi government promoted the autobahn network heavily as a symbol of modern engineering and national renewal, and this photograph, kept in a propaganda album, was part of that effort to present the road as a public achievement.
