The view in this picture is taken from above the Centennial Exposition, the world's fair held in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park in 1876 to mark a century since the Declaration of Independence. Tethered balloon ascents gave visitors a chance to look down on the fairgrounds, with its exhibition halls, gardens and crowds, in a way few could otherwise experience. Aerial views like this one were a novelty at the time and remain useful today for showing how the sprawling exposition was laid out.
