Seen from above, the grounds of the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park spread out as a patchwork of exhibition halls, walkways, and gardens, a vantage few visitors could reach at the time. Views like this depended on tethered balloon ascents, which lifted passengers and observers over the fairgrounds and offered a rare chance to record the site's layout from the air. The exposition marked the nation's hundredth anniversary of independence, and its sprawling plan remains a useful record of how the fair was organized.
