A view taken from inside the Ship House at the Navy Yard looks out over the working edge of Philadelphia, a place few city pictures show. The Philadelphia Navy Yard was established in 1801 and grew into one of the country's major shipbuilding and repair sites along the Delaware River. Its covered slips let crews build and repair vessels out of the weather, and the yard played a central role in the city's economy and in the nation's naval work for well over a century. Pictures taken from within these structures show how closely the river, the ships and the city were tied together.
