Chaplin's Tramp character is the one to look for here, shown in the department-store setting of *The Floorwalker*, a 1916 short that he wrote, directed, and starred in for the Mutual Film Corporation. The store comedy was one of the films that made him one of the most recognized performers in the world, and its physical gags, built around an escalating chase through a crowded store, reflect how carefully he had learned to use the slapstick style of the period. This poster dates from the same year as the film's release, when studios and theaters relied on such large printed sheets to advertise short features to audiences who saw several comedies in a single program.
