A first-story floor plan of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., drawn in colored ink, watercolor, and wash, shows how the ground level was arranged during the building's planning. The library had long been crowded into rooms inside the U.S. Capitol, and Congress authorized a separate building in 1886 so its growing collections could expand. The architects, John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, designed the structure, which opened in 1897 as the Thomas Jefferson Building. Drawings like this one, now held by the Library's Prints and Photographs Division, record the planning behind its ornate interiors.
