Pickett's Charge, launched on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, was the final Confederate assault of the three-day battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Roughly 12,500 Confederate infantry advanced across open fields toward the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, and the attack collapsed under artillery and rifle fire within about an hour. The defeat ended General Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North and marked a turning point in the Civil War, and the open ground the men crossed remains one of the most recognized stretches of the battlefield today.
