Registered for copyright in mid-May 1887, this print is associated with Louis Prang & Co., the Boston firm known for color lithographs that brought Civil War subjects to American homes long after the fighting ended. Its subject is the climactic assault of July 3, 1863, when about 12,500 Confederate troops under George Pickett advanced across open fields toward the Union center on Cemetery Ridge and were driven back with heavy losses. The print reflects how the battle's turning point was being packaged for a public eager to revisit it. The maker attribution comes from an unverified catalog card, so the details should be checked against the Library's records.
