This halftone print pairs portraits of William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, the two men the Republican National Convention put forward for the 1900 election. McKinley, then serving his first term as president, was renominated for a second term, and Roosevelt, New York's governor and a hero of the Spanish-American War, was chosen as his running mate. The halftone process let newspapers and magazines reproduce photographs cheaply alongside text, so this sheet was likely cut from a periodical. Its credit lines, one dated 1900 and one 1898, show that the portraits were taken at different times. Within a year of the election, McKinley was assassinated, and Roosevelt became president.
