This glass negative is catalogued under the name Gen. W.H. Gordon, a title the Library of Congress says comes from caption cards and other data from the Bain News Service that has not been verified. Bain was a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so the image was probably made for a press purpose and chosen for public interest. The record gives no date, leaving the sitter's identity and the occasion open for researchers. The glass format is also worth noting, since these plates were the working medium of news photography until flexible film gradually replaced them.
