A group of schoolchildren posed for the camera on this glass negative, which carries the title Maury School, though that name comes from data supplied with the plate and has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company made it in Washington, D.C., a firm that produced a large body of street scenes, buildings, and group portraits in the early twentieth century. The 8 by 6 inch glass was a common format of the period, and the faint streaks in the coating reflect the natural aging of the emulsion. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
