A swimming pool at Central High School in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this glass negative, a rare view of the indoor athletic facilities of a city public school in the early twentieth century. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed Washington streets, buildings, and institutions for postcards and publications during the 1910s and 1920s. The negative was donated to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Look for the streaks and blotches in the image, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion on the glass.
