Corn and beans, the staple crops named in this scene, anchor a view of Timucua farming in what is now Florida. The composition traces back to watercolors that Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues painted in 1564, when he accompanied the French Huguenot colony there. Theodor de Bry later engraved these works for a 1591 publication, and this 1928 color reproduction comes from a French edition of Le Moyne's work edited by Charles Germain Marie Bourel de La Roncière. It offers a useful way to study how a sixteenth-century European artist recorded Native agricultural labor.
