At the Madison, Indiana chautauqua on July 6, 1901, William Jennings Bryan addressed a large crowd gathered before the platform. Bryan had been the Democratic nominee for president in 1896 and again in 1900, and he remained one of the most recognized public speakers of his day. Chautauquas like this one brought lectures, music, and debate to towns across the country during the summer. Because the picture is a stereograph, it was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gives the crowd a sense of depth and shows how much public life then depended on the spoken word.
