The bicycles and tricycles in this scene point to the American District Telegraph Company, whose messenger boys carried telegrams and small packages around Indianapolis in August 1908. Many of these messengers were boys in their early teens, pedaling between offices and homes for wages. The picture is attributed to Lewis Hine, who was photographing working children for the National Child Labor Committee at the time, and his street-trade series recorded the jobs that drew young people into city work.
