Few sitters of the eighteenth century were painted as often as Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, the marquise de Pompadour, and this print reproduces one of those portraits, though the record does not name the original artist. Born in 1721 to a middle-class Parisian family, she became the official mistress of Louis XV around 1745 and held real influence over court appointments, politics and the arts. She was a major patron of painters such as François Boucher and of the Sèvres porcelain manufactory, and her taste helped shape the Rococo style. Photoprints like this one, made between 1900 and 1950, let students and collectors study such court portraits long after many of the originals had moved into private hands or museums.
