The subject here is a Navajo hogan, the traditional dwelling of the Diné (Navajo) people of the Southwest, built from logs and packed earth in a rounded form. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1905 for his multi-volume study *The North American Indian*, and it appeared on page 82 of the first volume, issued in 1907. Hogans were usually built from materials found nearby, and their doorways traditionally faced east, a practice tied to ceremony and daily life. Curtis's images of structures like this one record a building tradition closely linked to family and to the land.
