The caption's wording, "H-Bomb hideaway," frames this 1955 United Press International photograph around a refuge built to guard against hydrogen weapons, a sharper focus than the general fallout-shelter images from the same decade. The United States had tested its first thermonuclear device in 1952, and the Soviet Union followed with its own in 1953, so by the mid-1950s many Americans were thinking about how to survive an attack. Civil defense agencies promoted home and backyard shelters, and the subject appeared often in newspapers and magazines. The gelatin silver print is a useful record of that anxiety and of the do-it-yourself optimism that accompanied it.
