This watercolor and graphite drawing shows the Liberian Senate, sketched in Monrovia around 1856, a few years after Liberia declared independence in 1847. Its maker, Robert K. Griffin, rendered the chamber's officials as a group portrait, an uncommon format for the period and a useful record of how the young republic presented its government. Because Liberia's founders were largely Black Americans who had settled there under the American Colonization Society, images like this show a legislature modeled on American forms, in a place few Americans of the time saw firsthand.
