Rising above the flat Lincolnshire fens, the tower of St. Botolph's Church, known locally as the Boston Stump, is the detail that sets this view apart. The church dates largely to the 14th and 15th centuries, and its tower reaches about 272 feet, making it a landmark visible for miles across the marshland. Boston grew up as a medieval wool and trading port on the River Witham, which runs past the church in this view. The print was made by the photochrom process, a early color method that used multiple lithographic stones to give photographs a painted look.
