The stereograph's inscription dates it to July 5, 1866, which places the view only a year after the Civil War ended, when many Gulf and Atlantic coast lights were being repaired or rebuilt after wartime damage. Dog Island's tower stood on a low, sandy barrier island where the light marked dangerous shoals for ships approaching the coast. Stereographs like this one were made as paired photographs that, viewed through a stereoscope, gave a sense of depth, and they were a popular way for Victorian households to see distant places. The card offers a useful record of how a working coastal light looked in the years of postwar reconstruction.
