Andre Grapperon, the rider named in this 1913 print, appears here as a motorcyclist, a subject the Library of Congress groups under 1910s motorcycling. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made by the Bain News Service in New York, so it was likely taken to illustrate a newspaper story rather than as a studio portrait. In the 1910s, motorcycles were still a young machine, built largely on bicycle frames with engines added, which links them to the bicycles on this board.
