Made from a window above the street, this 1907 view by Alfred Stieglitz shows New York in winter, with the city reduced to soft shapes and tonal masses. Stieglitz, the leading figure of the Photo-Secession, published it as a photogravure in *Camera Work*, the journal he edited, where it appeared in the October 1907 issue. The title's "snapshot" points to the informal, unposed vantage that many pictorialist photographers were beginning to value over elaborate staging. Notice how the snow and muted light flatten the scene into a quiet study of form.
