Few pictures in this gallery show the machinery that moved books through a large library, and this one centers on the book conveyors named in its title, set among the bookstacks of the Jefferson Building. The Library of Congress opened in that building in 1897 after years of construction, and its planners built mechanical handling into the stacks to carry a steadily growing collection between shelves and reading rooms. The record dates the print only to a span between 1886 and 1900, so it may show the building during its construction or in its first years of use.
