Few pictures show the machinery behind the Library of Congress as plainly as this one, which records the book conveyors in the bookstacks of the Jefferson Building. The building opened in 1897 after years of construction, and its designers relied on mechanical conveyors and lifts to carry books from the stacks to the reading rooms. The print is dated only to a span between 1886 and 1900, so it probably shows the building during construction or early use, when the new system was still worth documenting. Photographs of stack interiors from this period are useful to anyone studying how large research libraries were engineered.
