Shown in a bust portrait turned to the right, Robert Schumann appears in a color print issued by Prang & Co. in 1897, more than four decades after his death in 1856. The Boston firm, founded by Louis Prang, was known for color reproductions that brought images of famous people into homes and schools at the end of the nineteenth century. Because Schumann died long before cheap color photography existed, the print must rest on an earlier likeness or an artist's rendering, a reminder of how the faces of composers circulated in this period.
