Turned toward the right, the composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy appears in this head-and-shoulders portrait, reproduced half a century after his death in 1847 at age 38. Mendelssohn was one of the most admired musicians of the nineteenth century, known for the overture to *A Midsummer Night's Dream* and the *Songs Without Words*, and in 1829 he led a revival of Bach's *St Matthew Passion* that renewed interest in Bach. The print is a color halftone, a process that was relatively new for commercial pictures at the time, and its publisher is uncertain, since the record lists Prang & Co. with a question mark.
