Dizzy Gillespie stands full-length and faces right, horn raised, in this 1957 stage photograph, with the upturned bell that became his trademark. By then he was one of the central figures of bebop, which he helped develop in New York clubs in the 1940s alongside Charlie Parker. He also brought Afro-Cuban rhythms into jazz big bands, and the decade's tours made him a widely known ambassador for the music. The print captures the performing style that shaped modern trumpet playing.
