Painted in flat, bright inks, this silkscreen shows street musicians as its central subject, a theme that sets it apart from the other prints on this board. It dates to about 1940 and comes from the records of the Harmon Foundation, a New York organization founded in 1922 that promoted African American artists when mainstream museums rarely showed their work. Silkscreen gained wide use during the Depression because it was relatively inexpensive and could reach ordinary viewers. The subject also reflects a theme common in Black American art of the period, where city life and music were treated with dignity and rhythm.
