Johnson's *Jitterbugs I* captures couples caught mid-swing, their motion set against bold fields of color. Johnson, an African American painter who spent years in Europe before coming home in 1938, kept returning to the dance halls and nightlife of swing-era America. This color silkscreen dates to about 1940, and its Harmon Foundation record notes a similar image on the back and an X struck through the design, details that may point to a trial or working impression rather than a finished edition.
