A blind singer, rendered in color, stands at the center of this silkscreen, set apart from the group scenes of street musicians that share its series. The print dates to about 1939 or 1940 and comes from the William H. Johnson designs that the Harmon Foundation issued in 1971. Street performers like this one were a familiar sight in city neighborhoods during the Depression, when singing or playing for coins was one of the few ways to earn a living. Johnson, an African American painter working in New York at the time, returned often to the everyday life of Black communities, and this print shows how he treated music as a central part of that street culture.
