A hand-colored photomechanical reproduction of a woodcut, this print takes its title from the troubadour, the medieval poet-musician who sang verses to lute or viol at courts and gatherings. The source is a series called Boixos populars de Catalunya, published by Grafiques el Tinell, a collection of popular-style Catalan images that drew on older folk and printmaking traditions. The record dates the print only to between 1920 and 1953, but its woodcut origin links it to the revival of traditional Catalan imagery in the early twentieth century. Troubadour culture flourished across Catalonia and Occitania from the twelfth century, so the subject reaches back to the medieval courts the image evokes.
