A breakdown in the wagoner's camp captures a fast, rowdy dance of the kind the term "breakdown" described in nineteenth-century America, usually played to fiddle or banjo. Dated May 6, 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, the pencil drawing shows the wagon drivers who hauled supplies for the armies, here passing the end of a day in camp. Its subject headings identify the dancers as African Americans, placing the scene within a wartime world in which Black workers and soldiers kept their music and dancing alive. The sheet belongs to a Civil War drawing collection given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919.
