The caption on this Navy recruiting poster borrows a phrase from President Woodrow Wilson, who asked Congress in April 1917 to make the world safe for democracy, and it urges viewers to enlist and help the sailor it shows. Erie Lithograph Company of Erie, Pennsylvania printed this chromolithograph, which the record dates to between 1916 and 1918, as the United States was preparing for and then entering World War I. Posters like this, designed by C. Carleton and printed in quantity, were displayed in public places to fill the ranks of the wartime Navy. The imprint also lists a New York address on Broadway.
