Decorah, in Winneshiek County in northeastern Iowa, was a small city of a few thousand people in 1908, built along the Upper Iowa River and anchored by its Norwegian-American heritage. Settled heavily by Norwegian immigrants since the 1850s, the town was home to Luther College, a Lutheran school founded in 1861, and to the Vesterheim Norwegian-American museum's ancestors in local craft and church life. Farming in the surrounding county, along with grain, dairy, and local manufacturing, drove the town's economy, and rail lines connected it to markets farther south and east. The city's churches, schools, and fraternal halls were central to daily life, and the Norwegian language was still widely heard on the streets in the early twentieth century.
