Printed in 1870 as a package label for Hatch and Co., this lithograph is titled *The Happy Medium* and is one of the few pictures on this board made for tobacco packaging. Labels like this were pasted onto boxes to catch a buyer's eye at the shop counter, so the printed image had to make its point quickly. The catalog assigns the label to agriculture and viticulture, which points to a rural or farm theme, though the record does not describe the scene itself. Its place in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division preserves an example of everyday commercial printing from the period.
