A fruit basket heaped with apples, grapes and pears sits at the center of this Thanksgiving postcard, which is what sets it apart from the many turkey and pilgrim cards of the same era. Holiday postcards flourished in the United States and Europe in the early 1900s, when cheap color printing and a booming postal system made it easy to send a seasonal greeting across town or across the country. Images of abundant harvest produce spoke to the holiday's roots in giving thanks for a good crop, and cards like this one were often tucked into the mail with a short handwritten note.
