Mary Cassatt's "Gathering Fruit" set its figures in an orchard, where women and young girls pick fruit from the trees, a scene the record ties to the idea of knowledge handed from one generation to the next. The print is a drypoint and aquatint, hand-colored, and it belongs to a group of works Cassatt developed in connection with her mural for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, which took "Modern Woman" as its theme. The mural itself was meant to celebrate women's education and achievement, and the orchard image carries that message through an ordinary rural task, making the act of harvesting a metaphor for learning passed down.
