The Black Hills, a forested upland rising from the high plains of western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming, have long held deep significance for the Lakota and other Plains peoples, who regarded the area as sacred. Landmarks in this range, such as Harney Peak and the granite spires around it, drew attention from explorers and settlers in the nineteenth century. Images of the region often capture the contrast between dark pine ridges and open grassland that gives the hills their name, a view that helped shape how Americans came to picture the West.
