The title pairs a railroad track with two canyons far apart: the Grand Canyon in Arizona and Elk Canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota, so the picture may connect a rail route to either region rather than show a single view. Railroads pushing west in the 1870s and 1880s opened remote canyon country to surveyors, settlers and tourists, and photographers were often sent along the lines to record the land. The rails cutting a straight path through rough, broken terrain are worth noticing, a contrast between engineering ambition and the wild scenery around it.
