Captain Ricketts and his hunter Mask are the subjects of this color lithograph, which the record credits to Benjamin Marshall as painter. Marshall (1767-1835) was one of the best-known English sporting artists of his day, and his hunting portraits typically paired a rider with a favored horse and the hounds that worked alongside them. This 1930 London edition, published by the British Art Co., carries that tradition into the twentieth century, when fox hunting remained central to English country life. The horse's build and the dogs beside it are worth a close look, since they were common features of sporting portraits.
